Can you still climb Uluru?

No. The climb closed permanently on 26 October 2019 at the request of Anangu traditional owners. Walks are around the base and to viewing areas, not up the rock.

Do I need a 4WD for Uluru?

No, not for the sealed roads between Yulara, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and the usual Kings Canyon route. You need water, a sound vehicle or a licensed tour, and respect for heat and cultural sites.

How far is Alice Springs from Uluru?

About 450 kilometres on the sealed Lasseter Highway, often treated as a 4.5-hour drive in ordinary daylight conditions. Fuel, water, and an early start matter. It is not a casual suburban hop.

Go where the weather is honest. Cooler months favour the Centre. The mid-year dry often favours the far-north reef. With three weeks, fly between them. With ten days, pick one.

Base walks, Kata Tjuta, and an extra day for Kings Canyon. The climb closed in 2019. Heat, not hype, decides the month.

Plan three to four days for Uluru and the Red Centre: sunrise and sunset viewing, the Uluru base walk, Kata Tjuta’s Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge, and Kings Canyon if you can add a night. Fly into Connellan (Ayers Rock) or drive about 4.5 hours from Alice Springs. You do not need a 4WD for the sealed circuit. Uluru or the Reef first is a climate choice.
